Todd B.A. (Honors, Psychology), MAPS graduated from Sydney University in 1968, becoming a member of the Australian Psychological Society in 1975. He started to work as a post graduate research psychologist at the School of Surgery, St. George Hospital (University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia) after his undergraduate degree in 1973. This research was essentially a psychoanalytic study of quantified unconscious ego-defenses and affect as predictors of behaviour and outcome in women with symptoms of breast cancer, conducted within a medical faculty, rather than in an academic psychology department. This work represented one of the first successful attempts to operationally define and measure unconscious mental processes and was published in the British Journal of Medical Psychology, 1978, 51(2), pp 177-189. Subsequently, Peter held a position as research psychologist at the Neuropsychiatric Institute, Prince Henry Hospital, Sydney, became a member of the Biopsychosocial AIDS Project at the University of California at San Francisco, consultant at the department of Immunology at St. Vincent’s Hospital, and research coordinator at the Albion Street AIDS Clinic at Sydney. Currently he works as a registered psychologist and psychotherapist in private practice. His primary fields of interest have been psychosomatic research, psychoneuroimmunology and psychoanalysis applied to the scientific understanding and treatment of such diseases as cancer and HIV/AIDS. Peter’s published, psychoanalytically oriented breast cancer work led to his involvement in research into HIV/AIDS, as another immunologically mediated or resisted disease being conceptualized within a biopsychosocial model of disease, particularly in the field of psychoneuroimmunology. He has published papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and a book “AIDS: A Pilgrimage to Healing-A Guide for Health Professionals, The Clergy, Educators and Carers” in 1992 distributed in universities in Australia and the United States with another as a work in progress elaborating themes from his paper, “Unconscious Mental Factors in HIV Infection” published in the interdisciplinary journal “Mind and Matter”, 2009 6(2), 193-206 (Imprint Academic). I’ll spend a few days in Prague and then it’s on to Vienna for a bit of sightseeing and meeting up with shrink rap radio listeners, Hugh, Margarete, and Reinhard. That should be fun. I’ve never been to either Prague or Vienna before and I’ve heard wonderful things about both cities. My entire journey is only 9 days and it will probably be over before I know it. There he was a member of a business process improvement team and learned the standard Total Quality Management tool set (Deming and Juran) and the Imagineering facilitation style taught at Disney University (Michael Vance's work). Tom later applied his business process and quality design skills as a management analyst in the insurance industry. In 1993 Tom began studying Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) at the Institute of NLP with Dr. Jonathan Rice and Andrea Rice, his partner and owner/rain maker of the business. Tom went on to get earn Practitioner, Master Practitioner, Modeling, and Training certifications in NLP. Tom has used behavioral modeling and interviewing skills to model highly skilled individuals across a wide variety of professions and industries. He has used this knowledge to help professional communities of practice develop and to create instructional materials and job aides to improve work performance. In 2008, Tom started Evolutionary Learning in Austin, Texas, USA. Dacher Keltner, Ph.D. received his BA in Psychology and Sociology from UC Santa Barbara in 1984 and his PhD in Social Psychology from Stanford University in 1989. After a post-doc at UCSF with Paul Ekman, in 1992 he took his first academic job, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and then returned to Berkeley’s Psychology Department in 1996, where he is now a full professor. Dacher’s research focuses on two time-honored questions. A first is the biological and evolutionary origins of human goodness, with a special concentration on compassion, awe, love, and beauty. A second is the study of power, status and social class, and the nature of moral intuitions. Dacher is the co-author of two best selling textbooks, one on human emotion, the other on social psychology, as well as Born to Be Good: The Science of a Meaningful Life, published in January 2009 by WW Norton Publishers, which makes the case for an evolutionary approach to the emotions that promote human goodness. Dacher has published over 100 scientific articles, he has written for the New York Times Magazine and Utne Reader, and has received numerous national prizes and grants for his research. He’s also author of the book Resurrection After Rape: A Guide to Transforming From Victim to Survivor. He has worked in crisis services as a staff director with the YWCA in prevention of domestic and sexual violence, where he developed and implemented programs with women's prisons, university sports teams, churches, and Indian tribes. In 2004, he became the first male given the National Award for Outstanding Advocacy and Community Work in Ending Sexual Violence by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. Psychiatrists are not taught about the great psychoanalytic psychiatrists of the past, but instead learn only medicine and biology, and are encouraged to reduce mental disorders to simple brain disorders. He received his Sc.D. from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Brazil, in 1983. He has taught at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Manchester, England. He is also a frequent Visiting Scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. He has conducted research in the Amazon jungle of Brazil for more than thirty years and has authored nearly 100 scientific articles and six books. His most recent book is Don't Sleep, There are Snakes: Life and Language in the Amazon Jungle from Pantheon Books in the US and Profile Books in the UK. It will appear later in 2009 in Korea, Germany, and France, among other countries. His research on the Piraha Indians of Brazil and his conclusions on the evolution and nature of human language have sparked tremendous controversy internationally. He has been featured in the New Yorker magazine, New Scientist magazine (three times), Scientific American, Science News, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, The Independent, El Mundo (Spain), and other newspapers in countries from Holland, India, Japan, and elsewhere, including extensive coverage in most major Brazilian newspapers and news magazines.
