<itunes:summary>David Sinclair,Ph.D. is a Senior Researcher at the National Health Institute in Helsinki, Finland. He has pioneered an approach to the treatment of alcoholism which has come to be called, the Sinclair Method. His protocol involves the use of opiate antagonists such as naltrexone or nalmefene to decrease the craving for alcohol over time. He finds that the use of these drugs just prior to alcohol consumption blocks endorphins and, thereby, leads to what he calls “pharmacological extinction,” which is to say the learned pleasure response to alcohol is unlearned.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Randy Gage is a multilevel marketing guru, success coach, motivational speaker, and author of the new book, Why You’re Dumb, Sick, and Broke… And How to Get Smart, Well, and Rich. He has been referred to as “The Millionaire Messiah” because of his assertion that it’s a sin to be poor. A search on Amazon.com will reveal that he has written a number of other books relating to success in multi-level marketing. The contents of “Why You’re Dumb, Sick, and Broke… And How to Get Smart, Well, and Rich” are as confrontational as the book’s title. It’s an in-your-face, take-no-prisoners approach that is meant to challenge many widespread assumptions. As a teenager, Gage was an alcoholic and a drug addict. When he was just fifteen, he went to jail for armed robbery. As you will hear, he later turned his life around and has gone on to great success. Randy Gage is not a psychologist but his book draws heavily upon what many would characterize as “pop psychology.” He is clearly in the tradition of authors such as Napoleon Hill (Think and Grow Rich) and Dale Carnegie. This is a somewhat different direction than our past shows have taken and I’ll be interested to hear your reactions.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Suzanne Lovell, Ph.D. for a number of years has been the program coordinator for the Master’s degree program in Art Therapy at Sonoma State University. After earning her own Master’s degree at Sonoma State, Dr. Lovell went on to earn her Ph.D. at The Union Institute. In addition to the Ph.D, she also is a Board Certified Art Therapist. Every other year, she also spends some weeks teaching in an Art Therapy program in Berne, Switzerland. In addition to her extensive teaching, program administration, and clinical work, Dr. Lovell has also authored chapters in two books on the subject. She has sent me a bibliography on Art Therapy which I will send to interested listeners. Just drop me an e-mail request. We close with a piece of podsafe music which seems particularly appropriate for our interview on Art Therapy with Dr. Lovell. It’s called “I Love Every Color” by Matthew Ebel and it’s on the Podshow Music Network.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Clark McCauley, Ph.D. is Prof of Psychology at Bryn Mawr College. He also has ties to my undergraduate alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania, where he is Director of the Soloman Ash Center for Ethnopolitical Conflict. In addition, he is co-director of the START consortium. START stands for the Study of Terrorism and the Response to Terrorism. And, I believe this group recently was awarded a $12 million grant by the Department of Homeland Security to study terrorism. He received his Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1970. His research interests include stereotypes and the psychology of group identification, group dynamics and intergroup conflict, and the psychological foundations of ethnic conflict and genocide. With colleagues he edited The Psychology of Ethnic and Cultural Conflict (2004), and with Dan Chirot he is author of Why not kill them all? The origins of genocide (Princeton University Press, in press). He is a consultant and reviewer for the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation for research on dominance, aggression and violence, a member of the American Psychological Association Task Force on Reaction to Terrorism, and Chair of the Subcommittee on Ethnopolitical Violence of the Policy Committee of the International Association of Applied Psychology. Recommended reading (with chapters by Dr. McCauley) includes Collateral Damage: The Psychological Effects of America's War on Terrorism edited by Kimmel and Stout, as well as The Psychology of Terrorism by Stout. We close with a podsafe tune advocating for peace. It’s called “Spirit of Lennon – Peace” by Brad Stanfield. To me it’s very reminiscent of John Lennon’s, “Give Peace A Chance.”</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Albert “Skip” Rizzo, Ph.D. is a research scientist at the University of Southern California in their Institute for Creative Technologies. I learned about Skip’s work as the result of a fascinating article in the August issue of Wired Magazine. The article described his research into adapting a Virtual Reality video game, called Fulll Spectrum Warrior, to treat Post Traumatic Syndrome among soldiers returning from Iraq. This project has received widespread media attention and there are links to these stories and interviews on his website. Dr. Rizzo conducts research on the design, development and evaluation of Virtual Reality systems targeting the assessment and training/rehabilitation of spatial abilities, attention, memory, executive function and motor abilities. Additionally, he is conducting research on VR applications that use 360 Degree Panoramic video for exposure therapy (social phobia), role-playing applications (anger management, etc.). He is also investigating the use of VR for pain distraction at LA Children's Hospital and is currently designing game-based physical rehabilitation VR scenarios for the elderly and persons with impairments due to do Central Nervous System dysfunction. He is the associate editor of the journal, CyberPsychology and Behavior; Senior Editor of the MIT Press journal, Presence: Teleoperators and Virtual Environments, and he is on a number of editorial boards for journals in the areas of cognition and computer technology. There is a wonderful sci-fi novel about virtual reality I recommend, which is Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. The show closes with a podsafe tune by famed central park musician, David Ippolito, called “"Crazy on The Same Day."</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>From time to time, I get requests from listeners asking for more coverage of the various diagnostic categories such as depression, autism, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and so on. So, it’s in that spirit that I invited today’s guest to talk about the Narcissistic Personality. Regular listeners will recall Maria Hess, Ph.D. who I interviewed on teaching with passion back in Episode #20. Maria regularly teaches a class on Abnormal Behavior at Sonoma State University, where I taught for most of my own career. And, it’s worth mentioning that she was a recent winner of that University’s Excellence in Teaching Award. Recommended reading by Dr. Hess includes Why Is It Always About You: Saving Yourself FromThe Narcissists in Your Life by Sandy Hotchkiss, as well as any books by leading authors in the area James Masterson and Steven Johnson. In this episode, Dr. Dave relates his story about "winning" the Liar's Contest in Lolo, Montana. Thanks to the Ron Helman Jazz Ensemble who provided the jazz track behind the Liar’s Contest story. You’ll find their tune, “Old Folks,” on the Podsafe Music Network. The show closes with a podsafe number, titled, "Be Here Now" by Freedom People.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Padma Catell, Ph.D. is the author of Drugs and Clients: What Every Psychotherapist Needs to Know. According to the book’s flyleaf, Drugs and Clients is written for people who are studying or practicing the art of psychotherapy, particularly Marriage and Family Therapists, Clinical Social Workers, nurses, graduate students, school counselors, and psychologists, all of whom have a need to know how prescription psychoactive medications and other mind-altering drugs, both legal and illegal, affect their clients. Dr. Catell is a Professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies, a licensed Psychologist, and a Marriage and Family Therapist. She also has a BA in Biology from Hunter College and an MA in Biology from the City University of New York with a specialization in pharmacology, which she studied at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She has been teaching psychopharmacology at CIIS and other graduate schools in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1984. Her advanced degrees in both Biology and Psychology, combined with her extensive teaching and clinical experience, make Dr. Catell uniquely qualified to understand and address the problems facing today's psychotherapists in this rapidly-changing, controversial, and increasingly important area of psychology. A book she recommends as having had a big impact on her life is the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu. In this episode, Dr. Dave shares his "Amazing Whitman" story about his brief and tragic career as a stage hypnotist. Podsafe music heard on this show is "Jazz Strat" by Pierre Journel and "The Road" by PW Fenton and The Second Ward.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Carl Greer, Ph.D. is a former engineer and Columbia University business professor who became a psychologist and then a Jungian Analyst and then in recent years has trained to be a Shaman at the Four Winds Society in Park City, Utah. In addition to all the reading and studying he has done in Utah, he has also taken trips to Peru to learn from some of the indigenous shamen there. In addition to his work with clients in both Jungian and Shamanic modes, he also teaches through The Four Winds Society. I was thrilled to meet Carl and get to spend time with him during my second visit to Park City to take a six-day training in Advanced Soul and Destiny Retrieval. Carl suggested the following readings: Shaman, Healer, Sage by Alberto Villoldo; Mending The Past And Healing The Future with Soul Retrieval by Alberto Villoldo; and Jung's Map of The Soul by Murray Stein. <itunes:summary>Stephen Cotterell, and his partner, Caron Chung, head up a consulting company called Executive Matters, working out of Brighton, in East Sussex, England. Stephen’s work as a consultant focuses on leadership development, teamwork, building community, and personal coaching. He is also a frequent speaker and presenter at a variety of conferences. He began working as a consultant about ten years ago, after leaving a successful career in banking to follow his own star. Although, he does not have a formal background in psychology, he spent two years training to become a Master NLP practioner. NLP, or Neurolinguistic Programming, is very much based on psychological principles, which makes it fair game for this series. A book Stephen recommends strongly is: A Whole New Mind: Moving from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age by Daniel Pink. We close with one of my favorite podsafe artist’s, New York Central Park Performer, David Ippolito, singing “Don’t Lose Sight of The Dream.” This song is available for purchase on the Podsafe Music Network.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>This episode documents my recent trip to Ireland to conduct a workshop on The Hero's Journey. In the process, I met with and interviewed Shrink Rap Radio listener Hugh Gormley, M.A. who originally trained to be a priest, then became a computer network consultant, and is in the process of moving toward becoming a counselor, having completed an M.A. program in psychology. Our conversation ranged over a number of interesting topics, including fundamentalism, the changes going on in Ireland, the Hero's Journey, and folk music, among other things. Hugh is a delightful conversationalist and we really bonded with one another. The show closes with a piece of Celtic podsafe music, "Wild Mountain Thyme" by the Brobdingnagian Bards.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. lives in New Hampshire and is an extremely versatile psychologist. Dr. Livingston has trained in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, done pioneering work on emotions in market research, served as an executive coach, and, more recently, become an Internet entrepreneur. He is also married to Dr. Sharon Livingston who appeard on Shrink Rap Radio episodes #11 and #13. In today's episode, I interview Glenn about his Dream Ansnwers software. You can read about the software at www.dreamanswers.com. He is offering it at half-price (U.S. $20) to listerners of Shrink Rap Radio. if you click here. For reading on understanding your dreams, he recommended a book by Gayle Delaney which I was not able to find on Amazon.com but you'll find plenty of other good titles by her there to choose from. In this episode, we also hear voice commentary from Mohammed, our correspondent in Baghdad. Finally, we close the podsafe music piece, "Not On The Radio" by Geoff Smith. Thanks to Tom Krymkowski, Broadcast Engineer, who helped reduce the background noise on the interview with Dr. Livingston.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>If you have ever been picked on or bullied, you know how hurtful it can be. If you haven't ever been picked on or bullied, then you should really listen to this to help sensitize you to the issue. Our Australian correspondent, Frank Smolle, interviews a psychologist there, Bruce Schubert, who has done a lot of clinical work and speaking on this topic. I wish I had remembered in the podcast to recommend the film, North Country with Charlize Theron. This film has a powerful depiction of employee abuse. One of the books Bruce Schubert recommends is People Skills by Robert Bolton. At the end of our podcast, stay tuned for the podsafe music piece, "Working Day" by Willie Shutter. After that is a promo for Podcaster Confessions.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>NLP was born in the early 70's, the branchild of John Grinder and Richard Bandler. They studied some of the leading therapists of the time but instead of accepting the standard theoretical underpinnings of the various approaches, they sought to develop a model of the behaviors which lead to therapeutic success. Pati McDermott has been a practitioner of this approach for about 15 years. You can find out more about both NLP and her work by visiting her website at www.nlppati.com. In the course of our interview, Pati recommended the book NLP: The New Technology of Achievement by Andreas and Faulkner. Shrink Rap Radio gets some positive feedback from the podcasters at Didgeplanet and Podchick. <itunes:summary>How does one cope with the stress of random danger, of car bombs going off daily? I interview Mohammed, a 32 year-old Iraqi living in Baghdad who shares a secret he dare not spread widely there-- he likes Americans. Mohammed describes the perils of daily life in Baghdad, his coping mechanisms, and his hopes for the future. Because it would be risky for him to share his photo with us, he provides the image on the right, which is the holy shrine in Najaf. <itunes:summary>Snakes are a fairly frequent dream symbol. Robin and Suzanne Maiden host the Jungian-oriented podcast, InsytWorks and, in a recent episode, they discuss snakes and the archetepal image of the snake swallowing its own tail, which is known as the Oroboros. In this episode, I replay a portion of their show, work on a dream that Suzanne shared, and breifly interview Suzanne, who is finishing up an M.A. degree in depth psychology at the Pacifica Graduate Institute in Northern California. Tying in the theme of dreaming, we once again end with the posafe music selection: "Living The Dream" by Chris Mills.</itunes:summary>
